Transportation Vision Scholarship

REQUIREMENTS

  • Civil or Environmental Engineering Major

  • Sophomore, Junior, Senior or Full-Time Graduate Student at a Southern California college or university.

  • Current ASCE Member. Please describe your involvement in ASCE in your application package.

  • Proof of Registration for History and Heritage Student Scholarship Night.

  • An unofficial transcript.

  • An approximately 3-5-minute PowerPoint presentation. (exceeding 5 minutes will not be scored).

    • A recorded video presentation delivered over a PowerPoint deck. Your slides must be visible throughout; narration may be voiceover or on-camera.

TOPIC:

Ride It, Then Fix It: An Orange County Transit Assessment

Complete one round trip you would normally drive — to campus, to work, or to another destination you visit regularly — using public transportation. Acceptable modes include OC Bus, Metrolink, train, campus and municipal shuttles, and any walking or biking required to connect them.

Then present your findings in four parts:

  1. The trip. Origin, destination, routes used, total travel time and cost, compared against the same trip by personal vehicle.

  2. The gaps. The specific points where the trip fell short — missed transfers, service frequency, incomplete pedestrian connections, first- and last-mile access, comfort, or safety.

  3. The recommendation. The single improvement that would most meaningfully change this trip. Explain why you selected it over the alternatives you considered, and address what implementation would require: cost, right-of-way, interagency coordination, and public support.

  4. The verdict. Whether you would make this trip again, and why.

CANDIDATE EVALUATION CRITERIA

  • Video – 55%

  • Grades – 20%

  • ASCE Involvement – 15%

  • History and Heritage Night registration – 10%


The candidates will be evaluated based on the above criteria in general. The percentage of each criterion may be re-evaluated after the review panel is formed, with an emphasis on the Video. Candidates must submit a link to the video in their application. Note: Presentations are evaluated on the quality of your observation, the rigor of your diagnosis, and your ability to defend a recommendation — not on production value.

The ASCE-OC T&DI Award will be honored in the form of a check payable to the individual student.


Funds may be awarded to multiple applicants totaling the amount of $2,000.  Awards and amounts will be determined at the discretion of the review panel.

History and Heritage/Student Scholarship Night Scholarship Application

General Requirements:

Refer to the specific requirements per scholarship. Generally, scholarship applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a Sophomore, Junior, Senior, or full-time Graduate Student at a Southern California college or university.

  • Be pursuing a Major in Civil Engineering or others (as noted in the individual scholarships).

  • Be a current ASCE Member.

  • Register for the History and Heritage / Student Scholarship Night on November 3rd at the Delta Mariott Hotel Anaheim-Garden Grove, and provide proof of registration as part of the application package. Students will receive a discounted rate for the event.

  • Provide an unofficial transcript. Applicants are typically expected to have a GPA of 3.0 or higher, however applicants with GPAs below that threshold are still encouraged to apply but should also provide a brief explanation of their situation as part of their application.

  • Video presentations are required as part of the applications. A PowerPoint (or similar) presentation should be prepared to address the scholarship topic. The use of AI to develop a presentation is highly discouraged, and applicants may be disqualified if AI is detected. Video presentations should be in the applicants’ own voice. Any images used in the presentations should include a source/citation.

  • Scholarship amounts listed are subject to change. Should there be a tie in scoring applicants, the ASCE Orange County Branch reserves the right to award multiple scholarships.
