Gary A. Gilbert Achievement Scholarship
REQUIREMENTS
Civil or Similar Engineering Major.
Sophomore, Junior, Senior or Full-Time Graduate Student at a Southern California college or university.
Current ASCE Member. Please describe your involvement in ASCE in your application package.
Proof of Registration for History and Heritage Student Scholarship Night.
An unofficial transcript.
An approximately 3-minute presentation using PowerPoint (or similar) slides that addresses the scholarship topic. The video must use the applicant’s own voice. The use of AI is discouraged.
TOPIC:
Walt Disney challenged conventional approaches to engineering, construction, planning, transportation, infrastructure, and environmental design, bringing together innovative ideas and disciplines to create something extraordinary. Identify a specific innovation, engineering solution, or development approach associated with Walt Disney or Disneyland and discuss its lasting influence on civil engineering locally, nationally, and/or globally. Cite examples of how this innovation or approach has influenced your own personal experiences, education, career interests, and/or perspective on civil engineering. What can Walt Disney’s approach teach today’s civil engineers about innovation, interdisciplinary collaboration, infrastructure, and designing not only for today, but for the needs and possibilities of future generations?
CANDIDATE EVALUATION CRITERIA
ASCE Involvement/Leadership - 10%
Video Presentation - 60%
Grades - 10%
Civil Engineering Activities (University & Professional) - 10%
Community Involvement/Volunteerism - 10%
The candidates will be evaluated based on the above criteria.
AWARD
The ASCE Orange County Branch Achievement Award will be honored in the form of a check payable to the individual student and presented at the ASCE Orange County Branch History and Heritage Student Scholarship Night on November 3rd, 2026.
Awards will be given to the students in approximately the following amounts:
1st Place Qualified Candidate: Up to $3,000 (Gary Gilbert Memorial Scholarship)
2nd Place Qualified Candidate: Up to $2,000
3rd Place Qualified Candidate: Up to $1,000
