Environmental and Water Resources Scholarship

REQUIREMENTS

  • Civil or Environmental Engineering Major

  • Sophomore, Junior, Senior or Full-Time Graduate Student at a Southern California college or university

  • Current ASCE Member. Please describe your involvement in ASCE in your application package

  • Proof of Registration for History and Heritage Student Scholarship Night

  • An unofficial transcript

  • Create one 2-3 minute video and 1 static social media post informing the public on the topic.


Topic:

  • Create one 2-3 minute video and 1 static social media post about the topic.  Include graphics, videos, animations, and/or other visual elements in the video (avoid a video that is just you speaking).  Include citations for resources you do not create yourself.  The video must include your own voice.  Heavy use of AI resources is discouraged.

  • Describe a personal experience that sparked your interest in environmental and water resources engineering. How did this experience shape your academic or professional goals, and how do you envision using your skills to advance sustainable water management, infrastructure resilience, or environmental stewardship in the future? In your response, highlight specific challenges you look forward to addressing.

  •  Submissions demonstrating creativity, research, and clearly presented facts/discussion will earn higher scores.

  • The winning submission(s) may be featured on the EWRI-OC LinkedIn account or other ASCE social media.

CANDIDATE EVALUATION CRITERIA

  • Topic Submission – 60%

  • Grades – 15%

  • ASCE Involvement – 15%

  • On-time Registration for History & Heritage Student Scholarship Night – 10%


The candidates will be evaluated based on the above criteria in general. The percentage of each criterion may be re-evaluated after the review panel is formed. 

AWARD

The ASCE-OC EWRI Award will be honored in the form of a check payable to the individual student.


Two separate awards are anticipated in the following amounts: $1,000 and $1000.


Awards to be presented at the ASCE-OC History and Heritage Student Scholarship Night on November 6th, 2025.

History and Heritage/Student Scholarship Night Scholarship Application

Scholarship List:

  • Gary A. Gilbert Achievement Scholarship ($6,000)

  • Thomas A. Broz History & Heritage Memorial Scholarship ($1,000)

  • Construction Institute Scholarship ($500)

  • Environmental and Water Resources Scholarship ($2,000)

  • Geotechnical Institute Scholarship ($1,500)

  • Transportation Vision Scholarship ($5,000)

  • Utility Engineering & Surveying Institute Scholarship ($1,000)

  • YMF Outstanding Student Scholarship ($1,000)

  • Most Outstanding Student Chapter

General Requirements:

Refer to the specific requirements per scholarship. Generally, scholarship applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a Sophomore, Junior, Senior, or full-time Graduate Student at a Southern California college or university.

  • Be pursuing a Major in Civil Engineering or others (as noted in the individual scholarships).

  • Be a current ASCE Member.

  • Register for the History and Heritage / Student Scholarship Night on November 6, 2025 at the Norma Hertzog Community Center in Costa Mesa, and provide proof of registration as part of the application package. Students will receive a discounted rate for the event.

  • Provide an unofficial transcript. Applicants are typically expected to have a GPA of 3.0 or higher, however applicants with GPAs below that threshold are still encouraged to apply but should also provide a brief explanation of their situation as part of their application.

  • Video presentations are required as part of the applications. A PowerPoint (or similar) presentation should be prepared to address the scholarship topic. The use of AI to develop a presentation is highly discouraged, and applicants may be disqualified if AI is detected. Video presentations should be in the applicants’ own voice. Any images used in the presentations should include a source/citation.

  • Scholarship amounts listed are subject to change. Should there be a tie in scoring applicants, the ASCE Orange County Branch reserves the right to award multiple scholarships.
