Construction Institute Scholarship

REQUIREMENTS


  • Sophomore, Junior, Senior or Full-Time Graduate Student at a Southern California college or university.

  • Current ASCE Member. Please describe your involvement in ASCE in your application package.

  • Proof of Registration for History and Heritage Student Scholarship Night.

  • An unofficial transcript.

  • Approximately 3-minute video presentation with PowerPoint (or similar) presentation.

  • Give credit to all images used.

  •  Use the applicant’s own voice: The use of AI is strongly discouraged.


TOPIC:

Please address both questions in your video presentation.


Question #1: Assume you are a member of the project team tasked with expanding a theme park in Anaheim. The project has a firm deadline, and the expanded and renovated park must be completed and ready to open to the public by July 17, 2030.You have been asked to recommend the most appropriate project delivery method for the project.


Which delivery method would you select—Design-Bid-Build, Design-Build, Construction Manager at Risk (CMAR), Integrated Project Delivery (IPD), or another method—and why?


Explain how your selected delivery method could help the project team manage two major construction challenges associated with expanding and renovating an occupied theme park. In your response, consider factors such as communication and collaboration, risk allocation, constructability, phasing, schedule, cost, and coordination among project stakeholders.


Question #2: Collaboration and teamwork are essential to the success of a major theme park. Successful construction projects depend on professionals who can adapt to changing conditions, communicate effectively, and work collaboratively to solve problems.


Please describe your past or current construction-related experience, including an internship, community service, student organization, club leadership, or other relevant experience. What was your role? What skills or lessons have you gained? How will those skills or lessons help you contribute to a construction team and overcome challenges in the industry?Civil Engineering or Construction Management Major.


CANDIDATE EVALUATION CRITERIA

  • Video – 60%

  • Grades – 15%

  • ASCE Involvement – 15%

  • On-Time Registration for History Heritage Student Scholarship Night - 10%


The candidates will be evaluated based on the above criteria in general. The percentage of each criterion may be re-evaluated after the review panel is formed, with an emphasis on the Video.  Candidates must submit a link to the video in their application.

AWARD

The Award will be given in the following amount: Up to $1,500.

Award(s) will be determined at the discretion of the review panel.


The Award will be presented at the ASCE-OC History and Heritage Student Scholarship Night on November 3rd, 2026.

General Requirements:

Refer to the specific requirements per scholarship. Generally, scholarship applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a Sophomore, Junior, Senior, or full-time Graduate Student at a Southern California college or university.

  • Be pursuing a Major in Civil Engineering or others (as noted in the individual scholarships).

  • Be a current ASCE Member.

  • Register for the History and Heritage / Student Scholarship Night on November 3rd at the Delta Mariott Hotel Anaheim-Garden Grove, and provide proof of registration as part of the application package. Students will receive a discounted rate for the event.

  • Provide an unofficial transcript. Applicants are typically expected to have a GPA of 3.0 or higher, however applicants with GPAs below that threshold are still encouraged to apply but should also provide a brief explanation of their situation as part of their application.

  • Video presentations are required as part of the applications. A PowerPoint (or similar) presentation should be prepared to address the scholarship topic. The use of AI to develop a presentation is highly discouraged, and applicants may be disqualified if AI is detected. Video presentations should be in the applicants’ own voice. Any images used in the presentations should include a source/citation.

  • Scholarship amounts listed are subject to change. Should there be a tie in scoring applicants, the ASCE Orange County Branch reserves the right to award multiple scholarships.
