Restoring the Mesopotamian Marshes
One of the world’s most unique wetland ecosystems and an area of extraordinary historical, cultural, and environmental importance. The presentation will explore the marshes’ ancient history, the traditional way of life of the Ma’dan (Marsh Arabs), the devastating drainage of the marshes in the 1990s, and ongoing efforts to restore this remarkable ecosystem. Sam will also discuss the marshes’ importance for biodiversity, migratory birds, water resources, agriculture, and the future of southern Iraq, including the challenges posed by climate change, reduced water supplies, and oil development.
