PROJECT AWARD WINNER

Outstanding Roadways and Highways Project

Orangewood Avenue Improvements from State College Boulevard to the Santa Ana River

City of Anaheim

This $17.17M multifaceted project involved comprehensive infrastructure improvements along Orangewood Avenue, spanning from State College Boulevard to the Santa Ana River Trail. The project is situated in a predominantly commercial zone serving as a main arterial to major freeways and highways (SR-57, SR-55, SR-22, and I-5) and access to restaurants, businesses, Santa Ana River Trail as well as the southern entrance to Angel Stadium. This project involved:

  • High voltage electrical undergrounding for Anaheim Public Utilities along with the relocation of multiple telecommunication service lines.

  • Installation of a new 16 inch water mainline for Anaheim Public Utilities and a new 16 inch water mainline for the City of Orange Water Department including a 25 ft deep jack and bore operation under an existing Orange County Flood Control channel.

  • Significant traffic signal enhancements and the integration of a new changeable message sign as well as new CCTV system.

  • Construction of various retaining block walls.

  • Installation of biofiltration systems.

  • Implementation of Resort-Style hardscape and landscaping, complete with irrigation improvements.

The project exemplifies how engineering projects can deliver social, economic, and sustainable development benefits. By improving community connectivity, improving access to the Santa Ana River Trail, supporting local businesses, enhancing public safety, and adopting environmentally friendly practices, the project not only addressed immediate needs but also contributes to long-term societal and environmental well-being. This comprehensive approach demonstrates a commitment to creating lasting positive impacts and aligns with broader goals of sustainable development and community enhancement. The integration of a biofiltration system enhances stormwater management, improves environmental sustainability, and contributes to the overall aesthetic and functional quality of the infrastructure. By leveraging natural processes and innovative design, the project addressed key challenges related to water quality and runoff management while supporting broader environmental goals.

The project achieves a balance between meeting the immediate needs of the community and providing long-term benefits that supports Anaheim's continued growth and development.
