President's Message - New Year's Resolutions

By: Josue Vaglienty, P.E. It is that time of year again, when we press the reset button and try to make our resolutions a reality. In my January President's Message, I share some personal resolutions, and resolutions the ASCE OC Board is working on to benefit YOU, the ASCE OC membership.
Secretary's Column - Celebrating Generational Differences

"Each generation goes further than the generation preceding it because it stands on the shoulders of that generation. You will have opportunities beyond anything we've ever known." - Ronald Reagan Traditionalist, Baby Boomer, Generation X, Millennial, and Generation Z ASCE OC Members make it a priority to come together to celebrate the valuable skills, traits, and knowledge that we each bring to the profession. In just the past couple of months, for example, we hosted the ASCE OC 2016 History and Heritage / Student Night, officially kicked off the ASCE OC 2016-2017 Mentorship Program, bonded over wine at the ASCE OC Annual Wine Trip, and started planning ASCE Dream Big outreach events.
Branch News - Wilshire Grand Redevelopment Project

By: Natalie Jensen and Jazzy Quinabo ASCE Orange County held the December luncheon at the Center Club in Costa Mesa with a presentation by Raul Rasco, P.E., the Jacobs construction management representative for the Wilshire Grand Redevelopment Project. The $1 billion hotel and office complex being developed by Korean Air, is about 85 percent completed, with a projected Substantial Completion date in Spring 2017. The Wilshire Grand Hotel is located at a prime location in downtown Los Angeles at 900 Wilshire Boulevard. The structure is 73 stories tall and encompasses 2.1 million square feet. The Tower features 16 stories of office space, 889 hotel rooms, 7 levels of amenities, and 5 levels of below grade parking. The project is being managed, designed, and constructed by a strong team of professionals, including Martin Project Management, A.C. Martin Partners, Brandow & Johnston Structural Engineers, Thornton Tomasetti, and Turner Construction Company. Keep reading to find out more on this mega project.

At the November 17, 2016 OC Branch History and Heritage/ Student Night dinner held at the Lyon Air Museum, the three local ASCE Student Chapters from California State University, Fullerton (CSUF), California State University, Long Beach (CSULB), and the University of California, Irvine (UCI) made “State of the Chapter” presentations.

SEI - Local Leaders Conference Held in Puerto Rico

By: Aileen Santos-Redman, P.E. The ASCE Structural Engineering Institute (SEI) Local Leaders Conference took place in San Juan, Puerto Rico on October 14 & 15. The event consisted of the working seminar on the morning of the first day, during which the Board of Directors shared SEI updates and the various committee heads informed us on the latest efforts of their respective groups, before we separated to attend two of four breakout sessions to have an in-depth discussion and share ideas on K-12 Outreach, New Membership, Use of Technology, and Holding an Event.
