Secretary's Column - Governor Loves Public Works!

In order for California to retain a high quality of life for all of its citizens and remain a world wide economic power, our infrastructure must be renewed, expanded and maintained on an ongoing and funding committed basis. At the State of the State address on January 5, 2006, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger announced his ten year $222 billion initiative to re-build California’s public works. The series of ASCE issued Infrastructure Report Cards, including the Orange County Report Card, was likely a part of the decision making process that spurred the Governor to take this step forward in repairing the State. Congratulations, to all, for carrying the message for so many years on the dire needs of our infrastructure!

President's Message - IT’S GREAT TO BE A CIVIL ENGINEER!

It’s great to be a Civil Engineer!  That’s how Bill Henry, ASCE National Past President starts out his speeches.  I agree.  I can’t think of a profession that is nobler in its purpose and more profound in its accomplishments than Civil Engineering.  We have every reason to be proud.  This is also a great time to be a Civil Engineer.  And Orange County is a great place to be a Civil Engineer.  Economic conditions are excellent.  The needs for our services abound.  Here in Orange County, whether you’re involved in land development, transportation, water resources, environmental, geotechnical, structural, surveying, or public works, you are busy.  It’s nice to be in demand.  That demand won’t soon abate if forecasts of job and population growth are accurate, and if the infrastructure funding measures are approved. We should be counting our blessings every day.
