Recently I had the privilege of being invited to attend a tour of Prado Dam by Colonel Alex C. Dornstauder with the US Army Corps of Engineers. I was to be the Colonel’s guest during a tour intended for Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez who represents our local Congressional District 47. I had previously toured the dam at the end of last summer with the ASCE tour, but after the January storm events including evacuation of people below the dam and subsequent hype in the news I thought it may be a good opportunity to obtain a few facts directly from the Corps now that the smoke has cleared. Furthermore, my interest extended beyond Prado Dam to the entire Santa Ana River system, and specifically, what may have occurred if Seven Oaks Dam had not been in place during that January event (construction of Seven Oaks Dam was completed in 1999).
