Celebrating Generational Differences

By Elizabeth Ruedas, EIT

"Each generation goes further than the generation preceding it because it stands on the shoulders of that generation. You will have opportunities beyond anything we've ever known." - Ronald Reagan

Traditionalist, Baby Boomer, Generation X, Millennial, and Generation Z ASCE OC Members make it a priority to come together to celebrate the valuable skills, traits, and knowledge that we each bring to the profession. In just the past couple of months, for example, we hosted the ASCE OC 2016 History and Heritage / Student Night, officially kicked off the ASCE OC 2016-2017 Mentorship Program, bonded over wine at the ASCE OC Annual Wine Trip, and started planning ASCE Dream Big outreach events.

With 200+ attendees, the 2016 ASCE OC History & Heritage / Student Night brought together Students Members, Younger Members, ASCE OC Branch Past Presidents, and seasoned professionals from private firms and public agencies across Orange County. The November 17th event not only offered a great excuse to explore the Lyon Air Museum and all of its authentic aircraft, but it also served as a unique learning and networking experience for attendees.

The ASCE OC Mentorship Program is another event that allows us to celebrate our generational differences by pairing professionals from private firms and public agencies that have more than ten years of experience with Younger Members who are seeking a mentor. In the past, this mentorship program has equally benefitted both parties. The mentees, for example, have been brought closer to attaining their professional goals, while mentors have had a meaningful opportunity to give back to the profession, while also re-energizing their own career. Now that we have officially kicked off our 3rd Annual Mentorship Program, we look forward to keeping you updated on the program's success throughout the year.

The ASCE OC Annual Wine Trip, on the other hand, promotes a lot of socializing in a much more casual setting. Although still a learning experience, as we learn more about wine and one another, the day trip to Temecula offers a somewhat distinct experience. This year, for example, we even did the #MannequinChallenge!

Lastly, the ASCE OC K-12 and University Outreach Committees are actively working with the rest of our OC Members to educate and inspire the next generation of engineers, while also helping promote ASCE Dream Big. Check out the trailer below!
