ASCE YMF Popsicle Stick Bridge Competition (PSBC)

By: Daniela Malott

ASCE LA YMF hosted the 21st annual Popsicle Stick Bridge Competition (PSBC) in collaboration with Orange County and San Bernardino Riverside YMF on February 28, 2015.  Approximately 200 students competed in this event which was held at the historic Union Station in Los Angeles.

This event brings together local high school students to participate in a competition to celebrate the engineering profession. It is a great opportunity to emphasize the benefits of pursuing higher education and careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Prior to the event day, participating high school teams prepared their technical reports, display boards, presentations, and built their Popsicle stick bridge. Volunteers from the civil engineering profession served as judges testing the bridges, scoring technical papers, display boards, and presentations. Prizes were given to the top three teams in the following categories: most outstanding teams, outstanding team for new schools, strength, aesthetics, presentation and technical report.

The 2015 PSBC was a great event and all YMF’s look forward to next year’s.
