Day of Making at Hawthorne High School of Manufacturing and Engineering
By: Isamar Escobar
On Saturday June 13th, ASCE YMF participated in the first ever Day of Making at Hawthorne High School of Manufacturing and Engineering. This was an opportunity for local students to explore the various professions in the area related to the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) fields. The event included demonstrations by the various companies present such as Space X, Northrop Grumman, Metropolitan Water District, Epson and various others.
At this fair, ASCE had the opportunity to share about Civil Engineering as a career. With the help of various Long Beach Students, we were also able to answer questions regarding the academic path required to become an engineer. Many students and parents were intrigued by the Dream Big trailer, as well as the CAD software utilized in the field. Since the event was open to the public we were able to reach out to a diverse group of people - from the younger siblings of many of the students to their grandparents.
It was a great experience to help share information about not only Civil Engineering, but about pursuing a higher education as well. ASCE looks forward to participating in the event next year!
