ASCE OC Sustainability Committee and T&DI
Biking Event
By Charlotte Wu, PE, ENV SP
Saturday November 4th was the perfect day for bike riding. This was the second joint bike ride of the year, hosted by ASCE Sustainability Committee and the Transportation & Development Institute of Orange County Chapter. WSP donated water bottles and pens for the bike event. There were more than ten locals participating in the bike riding on Saturday.
We all met up at the Parkview Shopping Center in Irvine to sign in and get familiar with the bike route. The majority of the trail is straight-forward and flat but also considered a class I Bikeway, which allows the biker a travel separately from the vehicular traffic. We began at Tanaka Farms, followed University Trail biking westward. The trail hugs along University Dr until it connects to Mountains to the Sea Trail along the San Diego Creek, from there it leads to Upper Newport Back Bay.
There were lots of birds to observe throughout the bike ride, including a pair of Osprey, commonly known as sea hawk. We made a stop at the observation point of Upper Newport Back Bay with the view of the bird sanctuary island. After the event, several of us were able to stay and have lunch together at the Parkview Shopping Center and enjoy the rest of the afternoon.
