ASCE OC K-12 Outreach Committee
Perry Elementary STEM Night
By Jenny Mital, P.E.
On March 15, K-12 committee members Crystal Mena and Jenny Mital volunteered at Perry Elementary School Science and Engineering Night in Huntington Beach. The annual science night consisted of booths with science and engineering activities ranging from biomedical to engineering, and was attended by over 100 students and parents. Jenny and Crystal volunteered alongside LPA Inc. engineers to teach kids about structural engineering. At the ASCE/LPA table, students strove to make aluminum foil boats and paper structures and bridges that could withstand the greatest loading of pennies. The kids had a great time, some staying at the activities for half an hour to try out multiple designs in search of the strongest structure. See below for upcoming K-12 outreach activities this spring:
- Friday, April 27: 7:30 AM - 9:30 AM: Castille Elementary 2nd grade presentation and lego shake table activity - 1-2 volunteers needed
- Saturday, May 19: 10 AM - 2 PM: Dream Big Film Event at the Frida Cinema that will include booths and activities from ASCE’s institutes and other engineering organizations, and showings of Dream Big.
If you are interested in becoming involved or volunteering for any of the above events please contact Isamar Escobar or Jenny Mital at k-12chairs@asceoc.org.
