Part 3 – Types of Volunteering

By Gregory Henk, PE, DBIA, Ret

ASCE-OC has an active and growing outreach program.  Professional organizations can help you through networking, but you can also become knowledgeable about what’s going on in the community beyond your firm’s projects.  I have become active in outreach through both ASCE and EWB but have enjoyed outreach through other organizations working with adoption and with Native American tribes including Navajo, Hopi in Arizona, New Mexico and Sioux in South Dakota.  I have done a mission trip to Mexico and I have also traveled to very remote areas of the Peruvian Andes on a mission trip with my church.  Many of our companies also offer opportunities for their employees to reach out to communities to offer support.  Mentoring is yet another form of outreach that is of great value in our profession.  So, volunteering can take many forms, within and external to our organizations.  If you are a veteran of volunteering, you know which forms work best for you.  If you are a beginner, pick one activity of interest and taste the rewards that come with it.

ASCE-OC offers many opportunities to volunteer – if interested, contact Greg Henk.
