Volunteering Opportunities

ANNUAL/SPECIAL EVENTS

Popsicle Stick Bridge Competition (PSBC): Coordinate the annual competition for high school students to promote civil engineering. Work with participating schools and LA YMF for the event. Tasks include preparing competition rules and guidelines, fundraising, coordinating venue, preparing flyers, and advertising the event for volunteers and judges. History and Heritage: Review important civil engineering projects in Orange County and nominate projects worthy of Historic Civil Engineering Landmark status. Orange County Infrastructure Report Card: Evaluate and grade Orange County’s infrastructure quality and performance. Release the report card to raise awareness the importance of investment in infrastructure. Click on the committee name to learn more or contact grchairs@asceoc.org.  

Awards Night: Help with the selection of Student Scholarship and Awards Dinner winners. To learn more, contact awards@asceoc.org.

Disaster Preparedness Committee: Work with participating local and state disaster preparedness efforts. Click on the committee name to learn more or contact disasterprep@asceoc.org.

OUTREACH COMMITTEES

K-12 Outreach Committee: Work closely with local K-12 schools for classroom visits, career day events, and science fairs. Advertise outreach events to members. University Outreach Committee: Connect the Branch/YMF with local university ASCE chapters (UC Irvine, CSU Long Beach, CSU Fullerton). Plan student mixers, resume workshops, mock interviews, and serve as mentor/adviser to student chapters. Write summary articles after the events to be published on the Branch’s Newsletter. Community Service Committee: Work with non-profit/volunteer organizations to create opportunities to give back and grow the community. Past events have included Corazon Home Build, Ronald McDonald House, food drives, and charity walks (5-6 events per year). Marketing Committee: Work with other committees during event planning for sponsorship opportunities. Work with the Branch for track annual sponsors. Update job postings on the Branch’s Careers page. To learn more, contact marketing@asceoc.org.

Publications Committee: Request articles from members and committees to be published in the Branch’s Newsletter. Review articles and edit for grammar. Assemble newsletter for bi-monthly distribution online and via email blast. Click on the committee name to learn more or contact pc@asceoc.org.

Website Committee: Keep the Branch and YMF’s websites and social media up-to-date. Work closely with all committees with website/email changes. Send weekly and/or as-needed email blasts to members to advertise events and announcements. To learn more, contact website@asceoc.org.

TECHNICAL COMMITTEES

Programs Committee: Plan technical tours and presentations throughout the year.  Volunteers need to brainstorm new ideas, seek out technical speakers, and coordinate the events. Sustainability Committee: Plan events throughout the year that promotes the sustainability, such as bike rides, beach clean-ups, and Earth Day Event. PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Professional Development Committee: Work with other committee and institutes to develop and organize technical presentations, tours, and workshops. Provide support to the Mentorship Committee and YMF. Click on the committee name to learn more or contact prodevelopment@asceoc.org.

Mentorship Committee: Foster relationships between mentors (experienced and accomplished professionals) and protégé (younger professionals). Prepare and review mentorship applications. Government Relations Committee: Organize government affairs activities for members to meet with policymakers at the local level. Volunteers may also help plan and/or attend state and national events, such as the annual Sacramento Fly-In and Washington, D.C. Legislative Fly-In. NETWORKING SOCIAL

Membership Committee: Recruit new ASCE members. Reach out to new members with ASCE benefits and OC Branch’s upcoming activities. Click on the committee name to learn more.

Life Member Forum: For ASCE members with over 35 years of experience. Coordinate special events throughout the year, such as LMF Brunch and History and Heritage Night. Click on the committee name to learn more.

Members who are also involved in other professional organizations are encouraged to serve as liaisons and share upcoming events or volunteering opportunities with ASCE OC. Examples of some professional organizations are provided below.
