Mentorship Program Informal Event
By Paul Gabot The 2017-2018 Mentorship Program held its first informal event on November 9th, 2017 at Union Market in Tustin, CA.Mentors and Protégés were able to socialize with one another over beverages and snacks in a relaxed and easy-going environment. The casual atmosphere of the market allowed Mentors and Protégés to freely converse with their respective counterparts as well as other participants in the Mentorship Program. More »
History and Heritage Night / Student Scholarship Night December 2017

Civil Engineers from throughout Orange County, and beyond, recognized the contributions of our experienced engineers and the dedication of the upcoming generation at the ASCE Orange County History & Heritage and Student Scholarship Night on November 16, 2017. Attendees arrived to the red carpet at the Marconi Auto Museum, mingling amongst classic race cars and high-end vehicles. Mentorship Program Kick-Off Event

Fourteen protégés were paired with fourteen mentors that spanned many different disciplines under civil engineering, such as structural, transportation, environmental, and water resources. More »

Big Shoes to Fill
By Clint Isa, PE Knowledge transfer is the essence of sustaining and advancing the engineering profession. As a profession, earlier generations of civil engineers are entering the twilights of their careers, careers that began on one side of the technological revolution and are ending on the other. They carry with them not just a wealth of advanced technical knowledge, but a way of thinking about problems that likely differs from those of us whose careers have been largely supported by sophisticated computer programs. I think that, oftentimes, younger engineers (myself included) are eager to solve complex problems with complex solutions because the technology affords us the ability to do so. What gets lost, and what earlier generations of engineers have, is the perspective of how to provide simple, yet elegant, solutions to complicated problems. More »
Ronald McDonald House
By Andrew Lam Every year, ASCE OC YMF volunteers at the Ronald McDonald House, where we would prepare and serve food to the families who reside there. In a brief summary about the organization, Ronald McDonald House in Southern California provides cost-free lodging support to children and families whose members are currently in care at the nearby hospital. Quite often, groups of volunteers sign up to prepare and serve food for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. More »

Mini-Golf Event
By Risa Abelgas, P.E. Casual, informative, fun, and full of laughter are just a few words to describe the Mentorship Program Mini-Golf event at Boomers in Irvine on March 30th. Nearly half of the participants from the program and committee members were present on the green. This informal event allowed both mentors and protégés to showcase their talent or learn how to mini-golf while encouraging a little bit of friendly competition. More »

Mock Interview Workshop
By Gabreelle Gonzalez, E.I.T. On March 11th the annual OC Mock Interview Workshop was hosted at Fuscoe Engineering. Local University students (UCI, CSUF, & CSULB) were given the opportunity to strengthen their networking and interviewing skills with the help of industry professionals. The workshop was preceded by a series of Resume/Interview panels at each University, allowing students to prepare for their upcoming interviews. More »

December Luncheon: Wilshire Grand Redevelopment Project
By: Natalie Jensen and Jazzy Quinabo ASCE Orange County held the December luncheon at the Center Club in Costa Mesa with a presentation by Raul Rasco, P.E., the Jacobs construction management representative for the Wilshire Grand Redevelopment Project. The $1 billion hotel and office complex being developed by Korean Air, is about 85 percent completed, with a projected Substantial Completion date in Spring 2017. The Wilshire Grand Hotel is located at a prime location in downtown Los Angeles at 900 Wilshire Boulevard. The structure is 73 stories tall and encompasses 2.1 million square feet. The Tower features 16 stories of office space, 889 hotel rooms, 7 levels of amenities, and 5 levels of below grade parking. The project is being managed, designed, and constructed by a strong team of professionals, including Martin Project Management, A.C. Martin Partners, Brandow & Johnston Structural Engineers, Thornton Tomasetti, and Turner Construction Company. Keep reading to find out more on this mega project. More »
