ASCE Code of Ethics
Engineers face ethical issues everyday. Most of these issues are easily resolved without much thought or reflection, but occasionally a truly thorny question arises that is not easily resolved. We all have moral frameworks that form the basis of our ethical reasoning; but sometimes these general moral imperatives are inadequate guidance in today’s complex business world. We call ourselves professional engineers, but the essence of professionalism is more than expertise in technical matters. True professionals must also uphold the ethical standards expected of members of that profession. Moreover, each of us must develop personal ethical standards to guide us in our interactions with others. Recognizing the need for ethical standards for the profession of Civil Engineering, ASCE developed a Code of Ethics for its members over ninety years ago.
