Essay:

I believe there are milestone events in a person’s life that could change their whole perspective of their future and success. Working for the Los Angeles County Department of Public Works is the most fascinating milestone for me; which is why I am studying to become a civil engineer so I can design, manage and construct projects such as buildings, bridges, freeways, roads, dams, tunnels, etc. I appreciate the work of a civil engineer and it is a true honor to come into this line of work to select various disciplines that are used to service our community as well as millions of people around the world. This career path is captivating to me because upcoming generations will always need civil engineers which are essential for developing the infrastructure of civilization that help generate the diversity of culture from city to city. Becoming an engineer connects and releases exquisiteness for mathematics and sciences and applies it to our lives that can be cherished and utilized by the general public. We have the ability to create canals and freeways, build residential homes and skyscrapers, bridges that connect cities and countries, and use materials from man-made and natural resources. As one of the most ancient forms of engineering, civil engineering continues to open the eyes of people to the beauty of big, strong, and immobile structures. In mentioning of appreciation, the ASCE organization has made a mission of exposing higher opportunities not just for professionally practicing engineers, but reaching out to students like me to not be afraid or intimidated by the weight and increasing stature of a prestigious way of working. The studies, exposure and success are well worth the difficulty and focus that comes with civil engineering. Being a part of the Road Maintenance Division with Public Works shows great engineering expertise that is one of many examples to the world because it serves the public. There exists design, maintenance, project management, exploring of the streets and highways as we join forces with the residents, crew laborers, supervisors, and other agencies. A unique blend of teamwork is what every future engineer needs and I am happy to have these rare experiences expanding in me as I continue my quest to graduate. Working there for three years has been the foundation for my dreams and aspirations for this profession. My plan for the future is to obtain my Bachelor’s of Science in Civil Engineering and continue my career with the L.A. County Department of Public Works. While employed, I will pursue my Master’s Degree in Structural or Transportation Engineering. Soon after that, I will be a licensed professional engineer seeking experience with a private sector to travel. Observing different cultures in other places will enhance my creativity and inspire me as an engineer to think with endless possibilities. With my engineering degree within reach, my lively experiences in energetic school and professional organizations like ASCE and with Road Maintenance have built my vision of the type of challenging and exciting work ahead of me.
