Essay:

From structures to highways, hydrology to wastewater – the field of civil engineering is developing into a more essential part of our growing society. As expanding populations continue to stress the infrastructure of our world, the role of a civil engineer becomes that much more significant. It is that role of “protecting[ing] the public health and safety and improve[ing] the quality of life” (Vision) that I appreciate most about our field. As an aspiring student engineer, I hope to become a transportation engineer in the future and endow upon myself the same role that many other civil engineers have. My admiration for Civil Engineering grows as our field continues to improve upon engineering designs through new technology and knowledge. As growing leaders, civil engineers collaborate with one another to resolve the challenges we face in the 21st century, therefore securing our society’s future. I find it truly gratifying that we aim to combine engineering principles with environmental policies to create a sustainable infrastructure. Another aspect that I appreciate about our field is the network that civil engineers must build with policy leaders, planners, and environmentalists. I value that we, civil engineers, work alongside different departments of our society to embody the idea of team work for the sole purpose of protecting the public. By collaborating with different organizations, civil engineers are able to implement advanced designs into our society and therefore create a better world for us all. My goal is to become a transportation engineer improving transportation systems, and ensuring the safety of drivers. I plan to further my education and knowledge by obtaining a Master’s Degree in Transportation Engineering after gaining work experience. With a higher education, I will be able to learn more about the approaches and solutions to the transportation challenges we face today. Furthermore, more knowledge in the field of transportation engineering will allow me to improve the transportation infrastructure and ensure the safety of the public. Also, another goal of mine after graduation is to continue building my relationship with the American Society of Civil Engineers Student Chapter of the University of California, Irvine (ASCE UCI). The organization has been an important part of my professional development as a student engineer as well as with my own personal growth. I wish to help ASCE UCI grow even further and connect their student body with more professionals. By making the organization one of my priorities, I will be able to leave a positive impact on the students to start setting or broadening their own career goals. I believe that it is truly rewarding to work in the field of Civil Engineering as an engineer that is able leave a positive impact on our society and the lives of thousands of people. As I work as a transportation engineer, I will always remember the goal of all civil engineers – “to protect the public health and safety and improve the quality of life” (Vision).
