President's Message - Soft Doesn't Mean Easy

By Jeff Braun, P.E. Engineering involves math and science, right? Long enough ago that I don’t want to say how long ago it was, I was a high school student who enjoyed my physics and math classes more than the history and literature readings. I loved tinkering with mechanical toys and seeing how they worked, checking out bridges and buildings to see what kept them from falling down. I loved my drafting class, where I was able to create plans for a house I may want someday.
ASCE OC YMF - OC Rescue Mission Volunteer Service

By Ashlyn Alexander On February 24th, 2018, ASCE OC YMF volunteered at the Orange County Rescue Mission in Tustin, California. Orange County Rescue Mission caters to men, women and children of all different backgrounds and walks of life and assist them to get back on their feet with love and Christian values. The mission provides breakfast, lunch and dinner and has different shifts for volunteers. The group helped with the kitchen services that prepares dinner from 2:00 pm -4:30 pm.

ASCE OC - Annual Awards Night 2018 "Beneath the Stars at Bowers"

For 2018, Bowers Museum in Santa Ana hosted ASCE OC for our annual Awards Night, celebrating the accomplishments of individuals and projects from public and private sectors in Orange County. Prior to the dinner, 270 attendees enjoyed an open-air social hour in the Margaret & Cleo Key Courtyard.
ASCE OC EWRI - Mid-Basin Injection: Centennial Park Presentation

In February 2018, the ASCE OC EWRI Committee welcomed Ben Smith, Project Manager at the Orange County Water District (OCWD), and Mike Tsoi and Erin Cabanero, who both served on the consultant design team, to speak on the Mid-Basin Injection at Centennial Park project. Implementing the Mid-Basin injection system at Centennial Park is key because it will recharge the GWRS with 4 wells only, while reducing well pumping energy that would otherwise be consumed in conveyance to the Anaheim basins.

OC YMF - University Outreach Resume and Mock Interview Workshop

By Gabreelle Gonzalez, E.I.T. In February, ASCE OC University Outreach held Resume/Interview Panels for the Local Universities on each respective campus. February 21st was CSUF’s panel, which had 4 professionals presenting and 9 students attending. CSULB’s panel was on February 23rd, with 3 professionals presenting and 8 students attending. UCI’s panel was on February 28th, with 3 professionals presenting and 39 students attending. On March 3rd, ASCE OC hosted a Mock Interview Workshop at Fuscoe Engineering; allowing the students to put into practice the information they received at their respective panels.
ASCE OC K-12 - Perry Elementary STEM Night

The annual science night consisted of booths with science and engineering activities ranging from biomedical to engineering, and was attended by over 100 students and parents.
