By Josue Vaglienty, P.E. The 4th of July is always a great time to celebrate summer and our nation’s Independence Day, alongside our family and friends. This year, while you’re busy eating BBQ, enjoying a day at the beach, or watching fireworks – take a moment and consider this - If it wasn’t for the seven Founding Fathers, the 4th of July would be no more special than the 5th of July! More importantly, one of those Founding Fathers was a critical figure whose courage, influence, and leadership led the way in transforming 13 American colonies into the United States of America. That individual’s name was George Washington – a surveyor and civil engineer (as well as an incredible war hero and our country’s first president)! As it turns out, there are at least two other significant American civil engineers by the same name that you may or may not have known about:

By Charlotte Wu, PE, ENV SP There are several notable sustainability measuring tools: Infrastructure Voluntary Evaluation Sustainability Tool (INVEST), Greenroads, and Green Leadership in Transportation Environmental Sustainability (GreenLITES) are a few notable ones; however, the Institute for Sustainable Infrastructure (ISI) Envision rating system can be applied to all civil infrastructure projects. Envision provides a holistic approach to mitigate a project’s impact on economy, environment, and society. The ASCE OC EWRI Committee invited Amanda Carr (County of Orange), Joe McGehee (Irvine Ranch Water District (IRWD)), and Ray Bennett (IRWD) to discuss the history, coordination efforts, and engineering principles of the Peters Canyon Wash Channel Capture and Reuse Pipeline Project. The project was recently recognized as the 2016 Environmental Engineering Project by the Orange County Branch.

It all started on a warm Saturday morning, where not only ASCE representatives but other organizations, came to give their time for the event.

By Nestor Godinez, P.E. The Annual Joint YMFs Soccer Tournament was held on April 1st in Santa Ana Barbara. Traditionally the tournament host YMF is rotated between Orange County (OC), Los Angeles (LA), and San Bernardino/Riverside (SB/R) including teams of working professionals and university students.
ASCE has partnered with the local Santa Ana Samueli Academy High School to help find companies or agencies that can provide a one week unpaid summer internship for students from local underprivileged communities. This school has special curriculum with engineering classes and they are looking to help provide real world training and experience.
Orange County Engineering Council (OCEC) will be hosting it's Annual Meeting on July 18th, a time to celebrate the accomplishments of the previous year, witness the induction of the new Executive Board for the following term, and also participate in a keynote address relating to the I-405 Improvement Project here in Orange County! This event is free to members but open to the public. If you've ever wanted to learn more about what OCEC does and how we impact our community we encourage you to attend and learn more.
