by Bill Lawson, PE, F. ASCE, Life Member In Memoriam Bobbie (Bob) Wright Williamson 1926 - 2016 On March 15, 2016, Bobbie (Bob) Wright Williamson passed away. Bob is not known to have been particularly active in ASCE, but he was a prominent Civil Engineer in Orange County between 1959 and 1994, and was well known and respected in the Orange County Civil Engineering Community. The following obituary for Bob was prepared by his family and was recently published in the Daily Pilot and Orange County Register:

The ASCE OC 2016 Awards Dinner was creatively re-designed and adjusted by the new Social Committee. This year’s event was hosted at a new venue, Seven Degrees in Laguna Beach. Every year ASCE OC hosts their Annual Awards dinner to celebrate the projects and people in Orange County honored by the Awards committee for the year. Over 200 people were in attendance as we honored outstanding individuals and projects for 2015. A total of 35 awards were given out, including 22 project awards and 13 individual awards.

By: Isamar Escobar On March 15-16, ASCE’s annual Legislative Fly-In took place in Washington D.C. and included a pre-conference Younger Member Program, a legislative briefing facilitated by ASCE Government Affairs, and constituent visits with state legislators. The two-day event consisted of 200 ASCE representatives from 49 states, including ASCE leadership, general members, and younger members - with several attending from the ASCE OC Branch!

Transportation Technical Group - OC Street Car Project

by: Dennis Mak, PE On April 5, 2016, Mr. Jim Beil, Executive Director of Capital Programs with the Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA), spoke to 65 transportation professionals and university students at UCI’s University Club, about the proposed OC Streetcar Project. In addition, UCI student team members from the HyperXite team provided a brief overview of their Hyperloop development. This presentation was hosted by the American Society of Civil Engineers, Orange County Transportation Technical Group (ASCE TTG), as part of an ongoing series presenting topical projects and programs addressing regional transportation needs. CSULB Student Chapter - PSWC 2016 RECAP

by: Cody Dodge, Co-President CSULB ASCE The last few months have been busy ones for the CSULB Student Chapter. On top of preparing their projects like Concrete Canoe and Steel Bridge for conference, they were also making sure the details were covered to be able to host conference as well. This year’s PSWC at CSULB was attended 1,247 students and the awards banquet had 1,300 attendees, which maxed out our banquet venue. This was a new record for PSWC attendance numbers.

K-12 Outreach Samueli Academy - Samueli Academy Internship Interviews

The internship program places 120 under-served and foster teens in summer internships to provide them career experience in science, technology, engineering, art, and math fields.
