I look back at 2015 as a celebration for our branch; with individual accomplishments, engineering achievements, advancement of our profession, and the improvements to our community. I thank you for your continued support and dedication to our chapter and our industry. I’m looking forward to ringing in the New Year with the excitement and passion that will make 2016 even better!
Secretary's Column - ASCE Life Member

By: Ramesh Gupta, Ph.D, PE A Life Member is an individual who has made a lifetime commitment to ASCE and the civil engineering profession by remaining a member for a full length of their professional career. To be a Life Member, one must have reached the age of 65 years and have paid dues in any membership grade except Student Member for at least 35 years and have had 10 years of continuous membership preceding the attainment of Life Member. On March 5, 2016, La Section of ASCE will be recognizing more than 40, including 20 members from OC Branch, as Life Members Additional information for this event will be forthcoming in near future.

This year’s event was hosted at a new venue, the Heritage Museum of Orange County, home of Santa Ana’s first Engineer, Hiram Clay Kellogg. The 192 experienced professionals, younger members, and students had the opportunity to tour the Kellogg House during the event to explore the museum and previous home of Hiram Clay Kellogg.

On Friday, November 13, 2015 the American Society of Civil Engineers, Orange County Transportation Technical Group (ASCE OC TTG) and ASCE OC Branch Continuing Education Committee hosted a half day seminar on Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) in the City of Irvine. The theme of the seminar was the past, present and future overview of ITS nationally and also regionally in the State of California. The seminar was very well received with five presenters covering various topics in ITS.

By: Isamar Escobar The Popsicle Stick Bridge competition is an annual event hosted by ASCE’s Orange County, Los Angeles, and San Bernardino Riverside Younger Member groups. We need help from structural folks to review the rules for next year and come up with some great ideas! Also needed are members to help run the event! The event is designed for high school students in these areas to develop engineering skills through critical thinking, problem solving, teamwork, and creativity. We hope you'll volunteer...and/or attend!
Social Committee - Upper Newport Bay Nature Walk

On Saturday November 21st, students from Cal State Fullerton and University of California, Irvine joined OC Branch member on a morning nature walk in the Upper Newport Bay Nature Preserve. The hike was led by an Orange County Parks ranger, and she explained the purpose of the different habitats and why they are so important to the health of many species that live or travel through the nature reserve. Upper Newport Bay Nature Preserve is a key location for birds migrating with the changes in seasons. If you are a bird lover, there is a portion of the Nature Preserve that is the perfect place to take a picture of your favorite migratory bird. The ranger also showed us where burrowing owls have been known to live in the recent past and there used to be a bobcat that lived near the Peter & Mary Muth Interpretive Center.
Mentorship Committee - Speed Mentoring Event

By: Gibson Phan ASCE Orange County (OC) Branch and YMF continued with the 2nd year of their successful Mentorship Program by inaugurating the next class of Mentors and Protégés with their first event of the year on November 4th and 5th, 2015. Due to this year’s large group of participants, the event was split up into a two day event separating individuals by career field.

Social Committee - Temecula Wine Trip

By Amanda Heise The annual ASCE OC Branch and YMF Wine Tasting Trip took place on November 14 in Temecula. The event sold out a couple weeks prior with a total of 30 RSPVs. The shuttle picked up attendees at both the Tustin and Corona locations before heading down to Temecula.
Mentorship Committee - Mentorship Kickoff Event

Participants consisted of mentors and protégés awaiting the results of their pairing, which were based on speed mentoring events hosted in November.
