President's Message - Imagine an Endless Water Supply

In case you have not heard, the water year in California was 50% below average for most areas and the snow levels were below 28% for April. California has had three dry years in a row, and Governor Jerry Brown declared a drought emergency in January. The California Drought and related issues are worth learning about. The ASCE OC Branch President describes what is being done on the State and local level to combat the drought's effects and potential future initiatives to combat drought related issues. Are you doing your part to conserve water?

Sea-Level Rise

The ASCE OC Branch's Sustainability Committee discusses sea-level rise in Orange County. Along its 42-mile coastline, Orange County boasts some of the nation’s most visited and economically important beach communities and a full suite of infrastructure to support them. However, the 128,849 residents living below an elevation of 10 feet face the threat of coastal flooding due to the sea-level rise and increased severity of storm events brought on by climate change.

ASCE OC YMF hosted its innaugural Jog-A-Thon fundraiser on May 17th at Crean Lutheran High School in Irvine, CA, to raise funds for scholarships and other outreach activities for local university ASCE Student Chapters, which included California State University Long Beach (CSULB), California State University Fullerton (CSUF), and University of California Irvine (UCI).

Early in the misty morning on the planes of Ski Beach, WE, the brave, the few were ready to carry OC YMF to the championship game. Lots of other people had the same idea that morning, but our team of only 8 players was easy to spot, with 20 or so engineers trying to assemble a soccer goal.
