It's a busy time for ASCE and the Orange County Branch. I thought I would take this month to bring it all together into one place and point out where to find out about upcoming events both at the branch level, the section level, and society wide. In addition I want to tell you about some changes that are coming up with our luncheons. Click "read more" to find out more.
Secretary's Column - Infrastructure Symposium

Region 9 held the 6th Annual California Infrastructure Symposium in Sacramento on February 28th and I had the opportunity to attend this year. I would like to share some of the highlights of the event. The presentation from Mac Taylor of the California Legislative Analyst's Office (LAO) was very enlightening.

On Tuesday, February 21st at the Center Club in Costa Mesa, over 160 members and guests joined together to celebrate the annual ASCE Orange County Branch Awards Dinner Banquet. This was a new venue for us and we were all excited to host our event here. We all enjoyed a wonderful night recognizing all the individual award winners and project winners as well as reuniting with some friends we haven’t seen in a while.

Younger Member Forum

Having hosted the 2011 Western Region Younger Member Council (WRYMC) Conference, OC-YMF was eager to attend this year’s WRYMC conference with renewed energy. As members of OC-YMF and other Younger Member Groups from ASCE Regions 8 and 9 flew into Portland, Oregon, they caught a glimpse of snow-capped Mount Hood staring down the Columbia River and downtown Portland, the host city of the 2012 WRYMC Conference.
Popsicle Stick Bridge Competition

The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Orange County Younger Member Forum (OC-YMF) in conjunction with the Los Angeles Branch YMF hosted the 18th Annual Popsicle Stick Bridge Competition (PSBC) on Friday, February 17, 2012 at California State University, Long Beach (CSULB). There were approximately 35 high schools and 140 students from the Southern California area that participated in this year’s competition.
California Report Card Released

“Infrastructure maintenance and renewal is critical for sustaining the economic engine of California,” according to the California Infrastructure Report Card 2012. Released Wednesday at the California State Capitol in Sacramento, the California Infrastructure Report Card reveals that California’s infrastructure earned an overall grade of “C” and calls for an annual investment need of $65 billion over the next ten years. ASCE president-elect, Gregory E. DiLoreto, P.E., joined Board Member Jennifer Epp, P.E. and the California Report Card Committee for the release.
In Memoriam - Thornton Piersall

Thornton (Thorny) E. Piersall was born May 30, 1924 and died peacefully at his home in Anaheim on January 29, 2012. Interment was in Oklahoma next to his loving wife of 64 years, Johnnye. He is survived by his brother Bob, sister Dorothy, nephew Jerry and niece Gricelda.
My Clean Water Act

Life Member Update

The Los Angeles Section’s Life Member Forum (LMF) meets the first Thursday of every month in Orange County at the L. A. Section’s office at 1405 Warner Avenue in Tustin. The meetings are from 10 AM to Noon and usually end with a light lunch. Meetings are low key, very informal and everyone has input and an enjoyable time.
