The recent National Conference of ASCE, held in Los Angeles in the last week of October, spent a great deal of time discussing global ethics in the procurement of professional services.  ASCE and national President William P. Henry, P.E., F.ASCE, are at the forefront of a world wide effort to combat corruption in the construction of public works.  The roots of this global ASCE leadership are found in the ASCE Code of Ethics.  The Code was first adopted in 1914!  As members of ASCE, we are bound by the ethical requirements found in the “Fundamental Principles” and “Fundamental Canons” adopted by our professional organization.

President's Message - Civil Engineering? What’s That?

Civil Engineers are rightfully proud to say we are building a better world by design.  Yet, our effectiveness is being challenged by the needs of a growing population coupled with a failure by governing bodies to understand the importance of our civil works. Witness the average-to-mediocre grades on the recent infrastructure report cards regionally and nationally.  How much longer can our infrastructure be ignored and abused before serious negative impacts are felt in our quality of life?  Our effectiveness is also constrained by our professional anonymity and lack of stature.  Civil Engineers, by and large, are content to let others lead while we labor in obscurity.  It’s completely within our power to change this and raise our professional stature, and have more influence on matters related to our fields of expertise … if we so desire.
