By Brianna Arth
On Thursday, February 28, 2013, Santiago Canyon College held a “Careers in Engineering” workshop for approximately 30 students from their Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (S.T.E.M.) program. The workshop was an interactive 1.5-hour session where students had the opportunity to ask engineering professionals questions about their educational background, career path, degrees and professional licenses obtained. Dr. Jian-Juei Wang, Ph.D. from Boeing represented the aerospace industry, Arturo Vivar, P.E from Mark Thomas represented the transportation and planning industry, and Brianna Arth, E.I.T. from Stantec Consulting represented the land development industry. In addition, each of the speakers shared their design experience and gave advice on some key steps students should take in order to pursue an engineering-related career. Dr. Wang shared his perspective on the advantages of research-based careers verses industry-based careers in either the public or private sector. Mr. Vivar explained the roles and responsibilitiesof being a Project Manager and Miss Arth emphasized the importance of getting involved through professional organizations such as the American Society of Civil Engineers or Engineers Without Borders.
