YMF - Plans and Schematics Workshop Feb 2013

By Andrew Easterling

ASCE’s Younger Member Forum of Orange County hosted a workshop for University of Irvine undergraduate students on how to read and interpret project plans on Thursday February 21, 2013. The workshop gave an overview of basic concepts regarding how to read Caltrans plans and exhibits.  The presenter discussed the different types of engineering drawings and contents typically found in a plan set.  Examples from various projects across the state were provided and displayed to for the students to review. The workshop ended with an exercise in which students were able to practice determining quantities and estimating the cost of proposed improvements at a single point intersection from a provided set of As-Builts and desired improvements.  After the workshop, students stuck around to ask questions about life after college, graduate school, scholarship opportunities, and professional societies, namely the OC YMF.  Students were encouraged and welcomed to attend upcoming YMF events.  The event was such a success that students and YMFers have already begun planning another workshop for next quarter.
