Sustainability Committee - Becoming a Sustainable Transportation Professional

By Kelsie Anderson, PE, STP

Greenroads Foundation describes the Sustainable Transportation Professional (STP) certification as one way to “demonstrate to others in your profession or field that you are one of a distinct class of individuals with a comprehensive understanding of sustainable transportation.”

The non-profit Greenroads Foundation administers the (ANSI/ISO 17024 compliant) STP certification process in addition the managing the Greenroads™ Rating System for assessing the sustainability of infrastructure project.

The STP exam is an open book, two-hour, online exam that has 60 questions. The test is available to take at any time (in other words you don’t have to setup a specific testing time with Greenroads). Question formats are multiple choice, multiple answer, and true/false. The exam passing score is 80%.

Exam preparation materials are described in the STP Candidate Guide and are available on the Greenroads website. The Greenroads foundation also offers an optional, 90-minute exam prep webinar for interactive exam prep with Greenroads staff. Registration as an STP exam candidate is not required to participate in the webinar. In preparation for my exam, in October 2012, I spent about 8 hours (spread over several weeks) reviewing the materials.

The fee structure is as follows:

Credential maintenance is required and can be satisfied through:

  • Repeating exams every three years
  • Sitting for refresher courses (especially in conjunction with Manual updates)
  • Project participation
  • Participating on Greenroads committees or at events with educational sessions.

There is one level of STP credential currently offered which validates the professional’s knowledge of the high-level ideas and broad concepts of sustainability principles and practices. Ultimately there will be three additional levels of STP certification to reach the widest audience and target specific areas of professionals who want to use their credentials in specific ways. These future levels include STP2’s that will represent professionals with detailed knowledge of the Greenroads rating system, STP3’s that will represent professionals with experience developing and implementing Greenroads projects, and STPMD’s that will represent professionals with specific expertise and knowledge in a rating category. Here’s a table of the four STP teirs from the Greenroads website:
