On Saturday, April 22, 2017, ASCE members met at Del Amo Mobile Home Park in Long Beach to volunteer with Rebuilding Together (RTLB) for National Rebuilding Month. During National Rebuilding Month, more than 150 Rebuilding Together affiliates across the country plan and execute projects to restore homes and non-profit facilities, thereby bringing national attention to the plight of America’s low- income homeowners and the communities in which they live.
There were a total of 12 ASCE members who volunteered. Volunteers consisted of members from local ASCE student chapters, including UCI and CSULB, as well as volunteers from ASCE MLAB. Volunteers arrived on location at 9AM and were given a safety presentation by the RTLB Vice President, Bill Leisy. ASCE volunteers were divided into two teams and given work assignments. One team was assigned various health- and safety-related tasks at several mobile homes located within the park, including installing smoke detectors, fire extinguishers and CO alarms. The other team was assigned power washing and exterior painting. At 11:30AM, teams breaked for lunch which was generously provided by RTLB. After lunch, teams resumed their work assignments. The work assignments were completed by 2PM.
The RTLB President, Terri Griffith shared her appreciation for the ASCE volunteers by stating "you all worked diligently and cooperatively. And you all made a very real difference in the lives of some most deserving homeowners!" RTLB thanks each and every individual who voluntarily gave both time and physical labor in order to help revitalize the City of Long Beach.
