Local Member Hosts Pump It Up For Platelets 5K Raises $10,000
By Ryan Hankes
This September we were able to support one of our very own YMF members in her charity 5k walk, Pump It Up For Platelets. Melissa Hilsabeck has been involved in OC YMF for about two years with her main involvement being the Mentorship Co-Chair for the year of 2016-2017. In 2010 Melissa was diagnosed with an auto-immune disorder called Immune Thrombocytopenia, better known as ITP. ITP is rare blood disorder that translates to an unknown cause of low blood platelets. Melissa got involved in the Platelet Disorder Support Association (PDSA) in 2011 and has hosted this 5k event every September for the past five years.
This year’s event took place on Saturday, September 30th at Ted Craig Regional Park. There were about 200 people ranging from participants to volunteers. At registration participants were gifted with a t-shirt and purple swag to wear during the walk. During the welcome speech everyone received a crash course on what ITP is and what treatments are available on the market. ITP has no cure, just treatments that do not universally work for all patients. Hamburgers, nachos, and tons of other snacks were provided after the walk that people enjoyed during the raffle giveaways. Some of the raffles included beer, wine, custom house décor, skate shop apparel and much more. This fantastic event was able to raise over $10,000! We are so thankful we were able to be a part of such a successful event. If you’d like to donate please visit itpwalk.org and navigate to Past Events. For more information on ITP you can visit PDSA.org. Melissa is the currently featured as the YMF Member Spotlight. Job well done Melissa! We can’t wait for next year!
