CSULB Student Chapter

Pacfic Southwest Conference (PSWC) 2016 Recap

by: Cody Dodge, Co-President CSULB ASCE

The last few months have been busy ones for the CSULB Student Chapter. On top of preparing their projects like Concrete Canoe and Steel Bridge for conference, they were also making sure the details were covered to be able to host conference as well. This year’s PSWC at CSULB was attended 1,247 students and the awards banquet had 1,300 attendees, which maxed out our banquet venue. This was a new record for PSWC attendance numbers. Better yet, this number made it the largest of any ASCE conference in the world, student or professional! The conference as a whole went very smoothly and CSULB received rave reviews from all of the attending schools about how much they enjoyed the conference. On the first day of PSWC, students spent the day competing in the Ultimate Frisbee tournament, Environmental Design competition and checking out the other school’s projects on display. Later that afternoon those students interested in finding a job were able to attend the career fair being hosted with over 10 companies present, all of whom were sponsors for PSWC 2016. Marine stadium was an awesome venue for the canoe races aided by the beautiful weather we were lucky enough to have all 3 days of conference. The banquet was an exclamation point Saturday night and a great way to celebrate all 18 schools hard work in preparation for conference. Despite focusing most of their attention on hosting PSWC 2016, CSULB still represented well by bringing home 2nd Place in Surveying, 1st Place in Kan Jam and 4th Place in GeoWall. CSULB would like to thank all of the awesome volunteers that came out to support and volunteer all 3 days of conference. We would not have had such a successful conference without your help. We are looking forward to seeing UCI bring another great PSWC to Orange County in 2017 and wish them the best of luck in planning! GO BEACH!
