OC Firm Spotlight - HNTB

By Vic Martinez, PE, HNTB Corporation

HNTB has been a leading infrastructure firm in Southern California since beginning work on Pasadena’s Arroyo Seco Bridge in 1914, the firm’s first year of operation. The firm’s many signature infrastructure projects in the region include: the University of Southern California Galen Center, the Interstate 405 Sepulveda Pass Improvements DB project, the LAX South Airfield, and the “Green Build” expansion at San Diego International Airport. Recently, the City of Los Angeles selected HNTB to deliver final design and construction support services for the Sixth Street Bridge over the Los Angeles River between downtown and Boyle Heights. HNTB’s Orange County office, located at 200 East Sandpointe Avenue, opened in 1988. Today, HNTB has more than 60 offices across the country, including five in Southern California – Los Angeles downtown, Los Angeles Airport, Riverside, San Diego and Santa Ana – with a team of more than 220 professionals. HNTB’s strong relationships with state and local agencies have provided the firm with many opportunities to shape, design and improve Southern California’s transportation network, including:

Kraemer Boulevard Grade Separation - HNTB performed preliminary engineering studies and final plans, specifications and estimates for grade separating Kraemer Boulevard from the BNSF Railway and Metrolink mainline. This $50 million project included designing an underpass structure at the BNSF Railway tracks and top-down type walls to depress Kraemer Boulevard under the tracks, avoiding right-of-way impacts. This project is under construction and HNTB is providing design support during construction.

I-405/SR-73 Interchange - HNTB was responsible for final design on this $48 million interchange project. The project involved adding general purpose lanes from Bear Street to the Santa Ana River; adding a new freeway connector branch from northbound SR-73 to northbound I-405; reconfiguring the I-405/Fairview Avenue Interchange, including a new flyover connection ramp from northbound SR-73; and modifying the I-405/Harbor Boulevard Interchange.

Orange County Toll Roads - HNTB is a joint venture partner of the Corridor Design Management Group that is acting as PM overseeing the design and construction of Orange County’s $4.4 billion, 67-mile toll road program. Each corridor ranges from six to 10 lanes. In addition to developing and overseeing the procurement of a DB contractor, the team managed delivery of this major infrastructure project.

HNTB Corporation is an employee-owned infrastructure firm serving public and private owners and contractors.
