By Kathleen Higgins, P.E. CH2M HILL

Employee-owned CH2M HILL is a global leader in full-service consulting, design, design-build, operations, and program management services for public and private clients. Founded by  four World War II veterans in 1946; CH2M HILL (now with nearly 30,000 employees worldwide) delivers innovative, practical, sustainable solutions—helping clients develop and manage infrastructure and facilities that improve efficiency, safety, and quality of life. CH2M HILL has long been recognized as a most-admired company and leading employer, and as an industry-leading program management, construction management, and design firm as ranked by Engineering News-Record (2012).

CH2M HILL has been serving Orange County clients since 1974, when we opened our first Southern California office in Newport Beach, California.  Our current location is on Hutton Centre Drive in Santa Ana adjacent to the 405 and 55 freeways.

Over the years CH2M HILL has established its Southern California presence in the transportation, water, environmental, energy, and chemical markets.  Our Orange County successes include some of the county’s major projects and programs including:

Design of the Eastern Transportation Corridor.  CH2M HILL’s management and leadership accelerated design efforts, which helped the design-build contractor cut the estimated construction time in half from 8 to 4 years for this 26-mile toll road project connecting areas in Riverside and North Orange Counties to south-central Orange County.   CH2M HILL's work on the project earned numerous local and national awards including Project of the Year Awards, from the Orange County Branch of the American Society of Civil Engineers and the National Honor Award in the American Consulting Engineers Companies (Civil Division for projects over $15 million).

Program Management for the Orange County Sanitation District.  In 2002, changing regulations and the need to upgrade existing facilities resulted in a 17-year Capital Improvement Program (CIP) valued at over $2.8 billion.  OCSD hired Integrated Program Management Consultants (IPMC), a joint venture in which CH2M HILL was a partner and Program Manager supporting the CIP for 10 of the most significant years of design and construction.  IPMC provided premier service to OCSD in implementing the overall program and many individual projects.

John Wayne Airport Engineering and Environmental Services. Over the years, CH2M HILL has worked on a number of projects for the John Wayne Airport, including the Taxiway G Realignment Study and Design; the Master Plan and Environmental Impact Report for expansion of the Airport; and On-Call Environmental services for stormwater compliance, groundwater management, and environmental site assessment.

Comprehensive Long-Term Environmental Action, Navy Program at the former MCAS El Toro. CH2M HILL provided a wide variety of environmental services at the former MCAS El Toro under the Navy CLEAN program to evaluate the environmental condition of the installation and identify uncontaminated parcels that were available for early transfer. The Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) Cleanup Plan and Environmental Baseline Survey reports were prepared, which identified approximately 63 percent of the site as uncontaminated and available for early transfer.

Extraordinary projects around the world. In addition to our award-winning work for Orange County clients, CH2M HILL has provided program management and design services for major programs and projects around the globe including:

• London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games
• Panama Canal Expansion Program
• U.S. Forces Korea Base Relocation in South Korea
