Mentorship Program Mid-Year Check In Event
By: Michael Pierce
On April 23rd, the OC Branch and OC YMF Mentorship Program held its Mid-Year Check In event at Dave and Busters in the Irvine Spectrum. The intent of this meeting was to celebrate successes and check-in with the mentors and protégés to find out how the program has been for them thus far. We received some great feedback on the program and were excited to hear how most of the pairs have become friends not only professionally, but on a personal level. Some quotes we received can be read below:
“Through this program, I have not only gained a professional mentor, but a great personal friend.”
“The mentor/protégé relationship is exactly what I was looking for.”
“This program is incredibly beneficial for young engineers. I wish it were around when I was their age.”
“I never realized how much I could learn from the younger mind of my protégé. It’s true when they say that the teacher can learn more than the student.”
The Mid-Year Check In event was the third mandatory meeting for the mentorship program since it began in October of last year. Other than these mandatory meetings, the mentor/protégé pairs have been responsible for coordinating their own meeting times and locations along with receiving several event suggestions in our monthly check-in email blasts. We found that most pairs have been meeting once to twice a month with a range of environments from coffee shops to ASCE events, and even golf courses.
The committee is currently working on setting up an outing for the mentors and protégés to all get together for a fun external activity. The end of the year banquet will be held in late summer and will highlight the successes from the year as well as thank all the participants for being a part of the program.
The committee plans for the program to grow next year and will be using the feedback from this year to continue to promote a successful program for the coming years.
