SteppingUp Career Day

On Saturday October 22, Orange County middle and high school students and professionals congregated at California State University at Fullerton for SteppingUp’s annual career day. SteppingUP is a non-profit program that provides low income, first generation middle and high school students with the guidance and resources necessary to pursue a higher education.

Two ASCE members volunteered their time, starting their day off at the career fair. Students visited booths staffed by professionals from a variety of fields, asking questions to learn about the education requirements and day-to-day activities for each job. The ASCE booth, with its eye-catching banner and free mints and pens, was quite popular and hopefully inspired some future engineers. After the career fair, students participated in mock interviews. Each professional interviewed about six students for five minutes each, looking for the perfect replacement for the CEO of Company Awesome. The students were well prepared with polished speaking skills, specific examples, and crisp resumes. The event concluded with a lunch at the CSUF Gastronome buffet, allowing the students to experience a taste of college life.

The event was a great success, and hopefully ASCE will participate again in coming years. For more information about K-12 volunteer opportunities through ASCE, email k-12chairs@asceoc.org .
