ASCE OC Branch and YMF Golf Tournament

By 7 am on August 5th in Irvine, the sun was shining, the birds were chirping, and the players were arriving at Oak Creek Golf Club for the First Annual ASCE OC Branch and YMF Golf Tournament. As the golf course staff was getting the course ready for our tournament, players were greeted by YMF volunteers at the registration table. Some players enjoyed a free donut, bought raffle tickets, or used the extra time to mingle with familiar colleagues. Others remained focused on the day ahead and chose to warm up at the practice range. By 8 am, all 80 players were at their golf carts ready to be led out to their starting holes for the shotgun start.

When all was said and done, the tournament was a great success! Oak Creek Golf Club is a beautiful facility with a championship golf course. The weather was perfect, the pace of play was quick, and the banquet afterwards was a nice end to a fun day of golfing with our colleagues. The banquet also saw many lucky raffle winners going home with great prizes, including brand new golf equipment, and free rounds of golf generously donated by the golf course.

The Tournament was a joint event planned by Kathereen Shinkai of the Orange County Branch and Tori Yokomoto of  the Younger Member Forum group. The event definitely held true to its “joint” billing. Most of the players were from the Branch level, while volunteers before and after the tournament were from the YMF group. In addition, a big thank you goes out to our civil engineering student volunteers who helped out during and after the tournament. Schools represented by our student volunteers include Cal Poly Pomona, UCI, and UCLA.

Team Parsons: Tom Mitchell, Mike Nease, Kim Strassner, Steven Lees

We were able to raise $6,000 for this year’s golf tournament. The funds will be split between the two groups. The Orange County Branch will continue to use these funds to support our students for scholarships and other events benefiting the membership. YMF will be using their funds for the Popsicle Stick Bridge Competition that they will be hosting within the next year.

Team Psomas: Bruce Kirby, Mark Mourey, Bob Talafus, Wayne Smith

A special thank you goes out to our Platinum Sponsor, Psomas, and all our tee sponsors. Without everyone’s support, we would not have been able to have a success event. Our list of tee sponsors includes:
