2012 Annual History & Heritage and Student Fellowship Night
By: Josue Vaglienty, P.E.
Over 100 ASCE members convened at the Center Club in Costa Mesa this past November 15th, to celebrate ASCE Orange County’s Annual History & Heritage and Student Night. Members ranging from students to Lifetime members gathered for an opportunity to recognize both the historical and recent achievements of ASCE Orange County as well as an opportunity to network.
Recognition of 2011-2012 OC Branch Committee Chairs was kicked off by Tapas Dutta, P.E., Branch President. The installation of the incoming 2012-2013 OC Branch Board of Directors was lead by Jay Higgins, P.E., Region 9 Governor.
The annual Order of the Engineer ceremony also took place, with Mike Thornton, P.E., ASCE Los Angeles Section President, and Eric Walker, E.I.T, Student Groups Chair announcing this year’s group of participants. Each member taking part pledged an oath to the Obligation of the Engineer and became a recipient of the symbolic steel ring.
Bill Lawson, P.E., History & Heritage Chair, recognized all of the OC Branch Presidents in attendance by adding a small personal anecdote for each one in attendance. Bill was also instrumental in providing an ever growing display of civil engineering historical archives that date back through decades of ASCE-OC’s existence.
The evening’s keynote speaker was David VanDorpe, P.E. who was able to combine his entire presentation into one slide! The presentation focused on David’s path to progressing in his career revolving around the US Army Corps of Engineers. By placing an emphasis on having mentors and mentees alike, David was able to convey to everyone in the room that one’s professional life can be positively affected by those that teach us as well as by those we teach.
For the Student Members in the audience, it was also their opportunity to represent their school pride. ASCE Student Chapters from UC Irvine, CSULB, and CSUF each gave presentations on their chapters’ activities and were enthusiastic about their prospects for the upcoming concrete canoe and steel bridge competitions. Many students also walked away with monetary scholarships and bookstore certificates provided through the Branch by the event sponsors.
