K - 12 Outreach Committee - SteppingUp Career Day
By: Amy Choi
ASCE YMF had the opportunity to once again work with SteppingUP and support them on their 5th Annual Career Day on October 11, 2014. SteppingUP’s Career Day is an opportunity to give middle school and high school students from low income families a chance to practice to speaking skills and ask professionals from different fields about their careers. In the first half of the morning, professionals were at their respective stations, waiting for students to come and talk to them about their profession. The students were assigned three professionals and then given the option to talk to other professionals working the field they were interested in. Each one of the ASCE YMF members had a wonderful time talking to the students about what they do and the students were very surprised that even though we were all from the same field of Civil Engineering, we all focused and specialized in very different disciplines. After the career fair was over, the students were then preparing themselves for a mock interview. All the professionals in the career fair now became a job interviewer. SteppingUP coordinators told the volunteers that these students have been preparing for months for these mock job interviews. As an “employer”, we were to critique the students from handshakes to professional appearance to how they answered their questions. At the end of the mock interview, we provided them feedback on what they could improve on and what they did well in the interview. This was a great, well organized event where the students were given the chance to practice their speaking skills and professionalism as well as to start thinking about career paths and pursuing higher education.
