OC Rescue Mission Volunteer Service

By Ashlyn Alexander

On February 24th, 2018, ASCE OC YMF volunteered at the Orange County Rescue Mission in Tustin, California. Orange County Rescue Mission caters to men, women and children of all different backgrounds and walks of life and assist them to get back on their feet with love and Christian values. The mission provides breakfast, lunch and dinner and has different shifts for volunteers. The group helped with the kitchen services that prepares dinner from 2:00 pm -4:30 pm. The meal for dinner was baked ham with a honey pineapple glaze, grilled chicken, cheesy scalloped potatoes and green beans with roasted cherry tomatoes.

We assisted with prepping the green beans, honey glaze, seasonings, cleaning dishes and helping the crew sort through food for freshness. It was nice and humbling to help and hear the stories of the workers such as the main chef. She actually went through the mission’s program and has become a successful chef that comes back to cook on Saturdays. The staff was thrilled to work with us and said that we are always welcom back to volunteer. They also gave us suggestions for other ways to help since we are an engineering organization. Overall, we had a great time and we look forward to more volunteer opportunities! Be on the lookout for more events and please join us next time!
