ASCE OC Mentorship Program
2020-2021 Mid-Year Check-in
By Lydia Chun, EIT | Mentorship Co-Chair
On May 6, 2021, the ASCE OC 2020-2021 Mentorship Program hit a milestone with the Virtual Mid-Year Check-In. On this date, exactly one year ago, was the Mentorship Program’s first ever virtual event after the statewide COVID-19 work-from-home order. At the time, the topic of the meeting was how to bridge the gap between different generations in mentorship and how to adapt during a time of crisis. The topic for this year was how to take care of yourself as a professional and individual as these trying times continue.
The guest speakers for this internal event were leadership coaches Sharmin Banu and Barbara Visser, who were also speakers at ASCE Women in Construction Week 2021. Sharmin and Barbara introduced a new perspective on the word “resilience” and how breaks are necessary for the brain and body. They shared examples of micro-habits that we can use in our busy schedules that don’t require much effort or time at all. The group broke into small groups on takeaway points, what kind of micro-habits work best for them, and how they can keep themselves accountable.
The event then ended with participants breaking into separate groups for mentors and proteges to discuss how the program has been for them. These small groups were a chance to meet other participants to share success stories, opinions on the program, and ideas for the remainder of the year.
