ASCE OC K-12 Outreach Committee
Engineering Art Contest
By Jared Lindo | K-12 Co-Chair
2020 had many unforeseen challenges for everyone, especially for our children. Now with children participating in distant learning for the first time and most of the normal avenues for learning having changed ASCE was still seeking ways to give back. One creative way to engage and give back to the community was by holding ASCE Orange County’s first Engineering Art Contest. The art contest was open to all children from 4 to 18 years of age.
A website was formed, flyers were made, schools were contacted, and social media outlets were filled with information on how everyone can participate. The theme for the art contest was “A Day in the Life of a Civil Engineer” with the chance to earn a prize. Art submissions were separated into three age groups with prizes being given to all participants and larger awards to art submissions that were placed first, second, and third for each age group. Each submission included the art work and a photo of each artist. There were forty-three art submissions from throughout California. The art work all had very unique perspectives and filled with engineering creativity. The art and their artists are featured on our website http://ymf-oc.org/committees/k-12 and all of the participants are able to share and gain fresh perspectives on what civil engineers do.
