Younger Member Leadership Symposium (YMLS) Alumni Summit

By Marionne Lapitan, EIT, ENV SP | Publications Committee Editor-In-Chief

On April 21st-23rd, ASCE Orange County members attended the ASCE Younger Member Leadership Symposium (YMLS) Alumni Summit held in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The YMLS Alumni Summit is an advanced leadership and soft-skill training workshop exclusively offered to ASCE Younger Members who have attended at least one in-person YMLS event before. This weekend was organized by ASCE's Committee on Younger Members (CYM), which included networking opportunities and advanced training on personal development, workplace leadership, and people/project management.

The weekend kicked off with a social networking event on Friday night with the local Las Vegas Younger Member Forum (YMF). On Saturday, the Summit hosted a full-day workshop, networking, and an evening social event. The workshop concluded on Sunday morning by noon, allowing for travel later in the day.

The workshops were presented by the University of Nevada-Reno's Kelly Kelsica Doyle, PE, and covered the following topics:

  • Networking and Holding Conversations
  • Difficult Conversations
  • Change Management
  • Decision Making
  • Managing Different Personalities
  • Applied Design, Procurement, and Development

Overall, it was an amazing experience for professional development and building a more robust network. It was also an opportunity to contribute to developing future ASCE leaders and younger members.
