ASCE CSULB - 2021 Dream Big K-12 Outreach Event

By Kyra Tan & Charlene Suarez l ASCE CSULB Co-Presidents 2021-2022

On December 4th, 2021, the ASCE CSULB Student Chapter hosted their Annual Dream Big K-12 Outreach Event for the fourth year in a row at the CSULB campus! Over 200 middle school and high school students from local schools in Los Angeles and Orange County attended the event.

Thirteen (13) workshops and demonstrations were hosted by student and professional volunteers throughout the day. This year's activities are shown on the list below.

  • Sustainability Dam
  • Foil Boats
  • Popsicle Stick Bridge
  • Materials Lab
  • Manual Filtration
  • Safe Landing
  • Spaghetti Towers
  • Liquefaction Demonstration
  • Water Treatment Demonstration
  • Complete Streets
  • Pipelines
  • DIY GeoWall
  • Design-Build Cardboard Box Workshop

The CSULB Dream Big Planning team was very happy to host the event in person again after hosting it virtually in 2020. The Student Chapter is very grateful for all of the ASCE student members and professionals who helped volunteer and share their experience with these future engineers!

Dream Big is one of CSULB Student Chapter's biggest events. They strive to inspire young students to pursue a career in civil engineering. Each of the hands-on activities is designed to reflect the different disciplines of civil engineering. In addition, a professional panel for both middle school and high school groups featured ASCE OC YMF and ASCE LA YMF professionals. Students were able to hear what each panelist does at work and ask any questions about their journey as civil engineers.

On behalf of the CSULB Student Chapter, thank you to all of the amazing volunteers and companies who helped sponsor ASCE CSULB Dream Big 4!
