At the November 17, 2016 OC Branch History and Heritage/ Student Night dinner held at the Lyon Air Museum, the three local ASCE Student Chapters from California State University, Fullerton (CSUF), California State University, Long Beach (CSULB), and the University of California, Irvine (UCI) made “State of the Chapter” presentations.

John Stapleton, the CSUF Chapter President started the evening off by describing how the CSUF ASCE Student Chapter currently has 117 members of which 71 are upperclassmen.  John went on to describe how the chapter’s main goals for the year were to increase membership participation in activities, increase underclassmen membership, and increase the number of outreach and service events.

John further described how 64 of CSUF ASCE Student Chapter’s members participated in the 2016 Pacific Southwest Conference placing 4th in the overall competition with a 1st place finish in the geowall competition, a 6th place finish in the technical paper competition, a 8th place finish in the steel bridge competition, a 5th place finish in the environmental competition, and a 7th place finish in the transportation competition.

John concluded by indicating that the chapter was already deep in to preparations for the 2017 Pacific Southwest Conference with concrete canoe and steel bridge teams already meeting two times a week and the geowall team practicing every weekend.

The next presenters were Lauren Kilroy and Mais Sagradyan, the CSULB Chapter Co-Presidents.  Lauren and Mais introduced their chapter’s leadership team which consists of 14 students, 2 faculty advisors and 2 practitioner advisors. Lauren and Mais then described in detail the chapter’s goals and objectives of:

  • Leadership and Professionalism
  • Outreach and Development
  • Involvement with Local Student Chapters
  • Preparation for the 2017 Pacific Southwest Conference being hosted by UCI
  • Recognition of Member Success

The final presenters were Karen Cervantes, the UCI Chapter President, and Cristen Alvarez, the 2017 Pacific Southwest Conference President. Karen introduced their chapter’s leadership team which consists of 15 students.  Karen then described in detail the chapter’s goals of:
