Presentations
On Wednesday, April 20, 2011 the Transportation Technical Group held their Board of Directors meeting to discuss future presentation topics and candidates for directors at large to be included on the future committee. Consideration for the speaker for the Transportation Technical Group July 12, 2011 luncheon include Jerry Wood from Gateway COG or Tom Wheeler from TCA. A few additional topics considered for subsequent luncheons include LAWA, JWA or 91 Design Build.
June Luncheon Meeting - The June ASCE Orange County Branch Transportation Technical Group bi-monthly luncheon featured Jerry Wood, Director of Engineering from the Gateway Cities Council of Governments. The Gateway Cities Council of Governments (GCCOG) represents the 27 cities and unincorporated county areas of Southeast Los Angeles County (about 2.2 million residents.) The Gateway Cities area is anchored by the Ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles, the largest port complex in the United States, receiving approximately 45% of the nation’s imports. In addition to the I-710 freeway (which is the primary truck route to the ports), the I-5, I-605, and SR-91 as well as various transit options, rail, and buses service the area.
This presentation is an overview of all of the current transportation initiatives and projects within the Gateway Cities sub-region. It will also cover the strategic approach that the GCCOG is taking to find and employ viable, forward-thinking, consensus-based solutions to transportation issues.Because of its location as a transportation hub, there are multiple transportation issues that affect not only the Gateway Cities but Los Angeles County and Orange County (and beyond) as well. For more than 15 years the GCCOG has been an active partner with Metro, OCTA, Caltrans, the Ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles, SCAG, and many others in joint studies and planning efforts that specifically look at transportation issues to improve air quality, mobility, congestion and public health.
