Mentorship Kickoff Event

Annual Branch and YMF Temecula Wine Trip

Speed Mentoring Event

ITS Seminar

On Friday, November 13, 2015 the American Society of Civil Engineers, Orange County Transportation Technical Group (ASCE OC TTG) and ASCE OC Branch Continuing Education Committee hosted a half day seminar on Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) in the City of Irvine.  The theme of the seminar was the past, present and future overview of ITS nationally and also regionally in the State of California. 2015 History & Heritage / Student Night

This year’s event was hosted at a new venue, the Heritage Museum of Orange County, home of Santa Ana’s first Engineer, Hiram Clay Kellogg. The 192 experienced professionals, younger members, and students had the opportunity to tour the Kellogg House during the event to explore the museum and previous home of Hiram Clay Kellogg. More »

Giant Magellan Telescope

GeoInstitute Lunch Presentation: Recent Trends in Pile Foundations Auger Cast Piles for Low Noise / Low Vibration

By: Clint Isa, PE The ASCE-Orange County GeoInstitute (GI) hosted its first independent luncheon on August 11, 2015 at the University of California, Irvine (UCI) University Club.  The luncheon, which was attended by over 45 people, consisted of a presentation on the findings of extensive testing performed on new deep foundation techniques employed for a $6 billion development in Playa Vista, California.  The presentation was given by Mr. Nick Briffa, PE, who is a Senior Engineer at Group Delta Consultants, Inc., in Torrance, California. This conference brings together high school youth from across California in a four-day leadership training, networking, and learning experience. Student Days

By Amber Falk, Gary Gilbert, Chloe Gharios, Jesus Velazquez, and Cody Dodge Thirty civil engineering students from universities across the U.S. were given the unique challenge of competing in teams to produce the best bid for a city’s request for proposal (RFP) to construct new seawalls as part of the ASCE/Construction Institute (CI)’s Student Days competition in Costa Mesa, California, July 31-August 4. Each year students are selected through a competitive application process to participate, bringing top engineering students from across the country together to work in teams with students they’ve never met before on a “real-life” construction challenge. This year three students were selected from our local universities – two from Cal State Fullerton and one from Cal State Long Beach.  More »

Sustainability Tour | Newport Beach Civic Center + Park

By Nathan Chase, PE, ENV SP, LEED AP We would like to thank the City of Newport Beach for hosting a presentation this past June on the lessons learned in sustainability during the planning, design, construction, and use of the City’s Civic Center and Park. Director of Public Works, Dave Webb PE, presented on the $140M project completed in 2013 and certified at the LEED Gold level. Dave and a few other City staff members also guided the nearly 40 attendees on a walking tour highlighting various sustainable features of the buildings and site. More »

Orange County Loop

Day of Making at Hawthorne High School of Manufacturing and Engineering

This was an opportunity for local students to explore the various professions in the area related to the STEM field. ASCE OC Mentorship Program Year in Review

ASCE Region 9 Legislative Fly-In 2015

By: Elizabeth Ruedas May 13th, 2015 was a particularly eventful day for participants of the ASCE Region 9 Legislative Fly-In. The State Fly-In is an annual event devoted to the education of current and local policy that ASCE supports. Participants have the opportunity to learn about current issues, meet with their local elected officials, make long-lasting connections, and learn about the political process at this intensive one-day program. This year’s talking points included the California Infrastructure Report Card (and mobile application), infrastructure, sustainability, public private partnerships, the high speed rail, STEM, and current legislation. Applying Lessons Learned From OC YMF

Pacific Southwest Conference 2015

By Ryan Hankes It was an eventful three days at the University of Arizona starting on April 9th.  A total of 18 schools, coming from as far as Hawaii, competed to be the top ASCE chapter.  The 19 competitions were engineering based in all types of fields, as well as sporting events.  The atmosphere in the area was that compared to any sporting event, with students cheering on their fellow ASCE members in the many competitions and events.  Each competition was given a point value based on how the respective schools placed in the events, the total of these events resulted in overall placing of the schools. Continuing Education Seminar on Ground Improvement for Challenging Sites in Orange County

By Clint Isa, GeoInstitute Chair ASCE-Orange County Continuing Education Committee (CEC) and GeoInstitute (GI) co-hosted a half-day seminar at the City of Irvine Council Chamber on March 13, 2015.  The seminar consisted of three presentations that focused on several ground improvement methods that were employed for recently constructed projects in Orange County.  The presentations were given by local geotechnical and civil engineering professionals - Mr. Ted Miyake, PE, who is a principal engineer at NMG Geotechnical, Inc. in Irvine, California; Mr. Ali Fayad, PE, who is a senior civil engineer for the Orange County Public Works Department - Flood Control Division; and Mr. Russ Lamb, PE, GE, who is chief geotechnical engineer for Stoney Miller Consultants in Irvine, California. HomeAid Sorting Day Event - Helping Homeless Families in Orange County

First Annual Orange County Spaghetti Bridge Competition

Another Event Full of Memories

On March 7th, 2015, Orange County Branch members journeyed to the Monterey Steakhouse in Monterey Park for the Los Angeles Section’s annual Life Member Brunch.  This event honors members who have advanced to Life member status in the Society.  Other members in attendance learned about the fascinating achievements our life members have accomplished over their careers.  The event took place on a beautiful day over-looking the city and its incredible infrastructure of buildings and freeways, very fitting for the occasion.
