A Panel on SB 1

ASCE Orange County Transportation & Development Institute and Government Relations Committee co-hosted a panel of leading local transportation agencies to promote the positive impacts of new revenue generated through the SB 1 gas tax increase. Port of Long Beach Harbor Cruise

On a wonderfully sunny day in July, OC YMF and the Metropolitan LA Branch jointly hosted a Port of Long Beach harbor cruise. Approximately 70 ASCE members and their families, along with the general public, coasted through the Long Beach Harbor into the Port’s channels. The tour got up close and personal with the crane rail operators at Pier E in Middle Harbor which is part of the Port’s Capital Improvement Program. More »

Effects of Earthquakes to California’s Water Distribution System

On July 18, 2019, the Orange County Branch and Geo-Institute co-hosted a luncheon featuring Professor Scott J. Brandenberg of UCLA. Professor Brandenberg discussed an extensive research study on the Sacramento/San Joaquin Delta, which included field testing, centrifuge modeling, laboratory testing, development of fragility functions, and development of a system reliability analysis procedure. With Magnitude 6.4 and 7.1 earthquakes occurring in Ridgecrest, California two weeks prior to the luncheon, this topic was particularly relevant to the 90+ local members who attended. More »

St. Francis Dam Tour

On April 27, 2019, Kimo Look of the ASCE Metropolitan Los Angeles Branch hosted an historical walking tour of the dam disaster site. His passion for the stories and lessons was infectious; he wanted to help attendees understand the context of the disaster in the decades leading up to the collapse and the effects the dam has on our lives and careers to this day. May 2019 Luncheon: National Toll Interoperability

The Transportation & Development Institute (T&DI) held its first 2019 Lunch Program on May 7 at the University Club at UCI with speakers from the Transportation Corridor Agency (TCA). Rick Carrier, TCA’s Director of Tolling and Customer Information Systems, introduced us to the “New Era of Tolling”, in which 6C tolling technology will allow to us to replace those bulky transponders with “stickers.” More »

Civil Engineering Professionals Reimagine Tomorrow’s Infrastructure

On Friday, March 29, the California Region (Region 9) of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) held their Annual Infrastructure Symposium at the San Diego Convention Center with the theme “Reimagining Tomorrow’s Infrastructure”. There were approximately 200 delegates total with a fairly even distribution among the parallel Transportation and Water Tracks. More »

Technical Tour: Sixth Street Viaduct Replacement

Talk of aliens and bats accompanied the 6th Street Viaduct technical tour on February 1st, 2019. Southern California residents have driven through this construction site for years and they watched the demolition of the iconic bridge just over the 101 freeway east of Downtown Los Angeles. More »
