Construction Institute (CI)

The CI Orange County Chapter allows our members to interact with other professionals in the construction industry whom practice civil engineering.  We regularly send active Orange County Branch members to CI Congresses held on a annual bases across the country.  We hope the Orange County Branch members will learn new ideas and find interesting speaker topics that we can bring back to our local branch members.  CI OC periodically holds joint events with the Orange County Branch to cover subjects related to the construction industry during branch general meetings.  The Orange County Branch and the CI Orange County Chapter work together to provide continuing educations events that are relevant CI members. We hope you will come out and participate in our institute and work with us to build a strong organization.

A Short 11 Years From Now

With the recent announcement by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) granting Paris and Los Angeles the 2024 and 2028 Summer Olympics, respectively, the countdown has begun. Much of the preparation comes in the form of infrastructure that must be constructed or reconstructed. And prior to that (or at least concurrently) – it must be designed by the A/E industry. A good amount of that work will land on the laps of civil engineers.

Gerald Desmond Bridge Project Technical Tour

By Josue Candelario On Friday, March 3rd the OC YMF hosted a technical tour on one of Long Beach’s iconic bridges, the Gerald Desmond Bridge. Gerald Desmond Bridge opened in 1968 connecting Terminal Island and Long Beach. Due to the increase in traffic and safety hazards the Long Beach Board of Harbor Commissioners moved to replace the outdated bridge. The new cable-stayed bridge will have two additional lanes with pedestrian and bicycle access. The project was awarded to a joint venture led by Shimmick Construction, FCC, and Impregilo. Construction began in 2013 and is scheduled to finish in 2018.
